Film | Empire's 50 Best Horror Movies Ever

With Halloween literally right around the corner, I thought I would take some of the horror films I've seen and those I want to see from Empire's 50 Best Horror Movies Ever and do a little post.

Empire's Best Horror Films 1
50. The Devil's Backbone (2001)
47. Audition (1999)
45. Cat People (1945)
44. Day of the Dead (1985)
I have been wanting to watch both the Devil's Backbone and Cronos ever since watching Hellboy but I still haven't gotten around to it. I've already seen the Day of the Dead remake so I think I should watch the original.

Empire's Best Horror Films 2
42. The Skin I Live In (2011)
41. Dracula (1958)
40. The Blair Witch Project (1999)
39. The Babadook (2014)
I watched Blair Witch Project while I was doing my A-Levels and it's safe to say that I thought it was terrifying. Same with The Babadook, I watched this in the cinema last year and I don't think I've ever been so freaked out by a horror film in my life.

Empire's Best Horror Films 3
35. Poltergeist (1982)
33. Don't Look Now (1973)
32. Let The Right One In (2008)
30. It Follows (2014)
I studied Don't Look Now when I was in Sixth Form and to be honest I wasn't too keen on it at first, but it definitely started to grow on me when we studied it in more detail.
I read Let the Right One In before I watched the film and I thought it was fantastic. I wasn't too sure that the film would be any good, but I thought it was almost as good as the book. I've added the Hollywood version to my list of films to watch but I don't think it will be as good as the Swedish version.

Empire's Best Horror Films 4
28. The Descent (2005)
26. The Others (2001)
25. 28 Days Later (2002)
22. Eyes Without a Face (1960)

Empire's Best Horror Films 5
20. Psycho (1960)
15. Rosemary's Baby (1968)
14. Wicker Man (1973)
13. The Cabin in The Woods (2012)
The Wicker Man is another film I watched back when I was in Sixth Form, and to be honest I hated it. It wasn't my type of film to begin with but then we had to watch it over and over again.

Empire's Best Horror Films 6
10. Jaws (1975)
9. Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
5. Halloween (1978)
4. The Thing (1982)
Jaws and Pan's Labyrinth are definitely two of my all-time favourite movies, I seen both of them more times than probably necessary.

Empire's Best Horror Films 7
3. Scream (1996)
2. Alien (1979)
1. The Shining (1980)

A Girl Like Her (Amy S. Weber, 2015)

A Girl Like Her (2015) Poster
Cast: Lexi Ainsworth, Hunter King, Jimmy Bennett, Amy S. Weber

Summary: Jessica Burns enlists the help of her best friend, Brian, in order to document the relentless harassment she's received from her former friend, Avery Keller, one of South Brookdale High School's most popular students.

Genre: Mockumentary, Drama

Watched: September 18th, 2016

This film had been in my watchlist for weeks before I finally got round to watching it, and when I did I was very pleasantly surprised.

I found the story to be incredibly moving.
We all know that bullying is something that happens everywhere in the world so I definitely found this difficult to watch at times knowing that there are millions of people who are able to relate to much of Jessica's story.

The acting was very good, especially when it came to Hunter King and Lexi Ainsworth. I thought Hunter's performance as bully Avery Keller was incredibly convincing but it was definitely Lexi's performance as the bullied Jessica that drew me in.

I'm quite an emotional person and I often shed a few tears here and there when reading books or watching films, but I didn't know what to do with myself when I saw this. I knew that the topic would upset me but I wasn't quite prepared for how upset I was.
I felt such an incredible sense of both sadness and hurt watching Jessica and I cried for her as though she was someone I knew.

The ending was what let the film down for me, because it feels as though Weber is telling you to feel sympathy for Avery because she has a difficult home life.

I don't agree with this at all, of course I know there are many cases where this still happens; however in this case although Avery's home is clearly filled with tension I don't think this had anything to do with her becoming a bully.
I get the feeling that even if Avery's home life had been completely different she still would have bullied Jessica.

Rating: 9/10
One Final Word: BRILLIANT!

If you want to see what happened next you should definitely check out these two interviews from Jessica and Avery: A Girl Like Her: Aftermath

Last Girl Standing (Benjamin R. Moody, 2015)

Last Girl Standing (2015) Poster

Cast: Akasha Villalobos, Danielle Evon Ploeger, Brian Villalobos

Summary: She survived a brutal massacre, but lost her life. What happens to the final girl after the credits roll?

Genre: Horror, Thriller

Watched: August 28th, 2016

This film instantly caught my eye and it was all because of the title. As a former film student I remember being taught a little about the theory of the last girl in one of my classes.

The final girl is a trope that is seen in horror films, more specifically in slasher films where a series of victims (normally a group of friends) get together and are killed off one by one, by the killer. The last surviving member of the group who is most typically female survives, and either goes on the kill the killer or to escape.

I absolutely love the whole idea of what happens to the final girl after the credits roll, even though it's something that has been done a number of times before Last Girl Standing definitely put its own spin on it.
Last Girl Standing (2015) Still Last Girl Standing is different from many slasher films because it starts the way a sequel would. The film begins with what would be the end of the first film, where Camryn and her friends are attacked before she becomes the final girl who then goes on to kill 'The Hunter'.

I really enjoyed this film, to be honest I wasn't 100% sure I would when it first started but it definitely started to grow on me. For me the beginning and the ending were the best parts, it was the middle section of the film that I struggled with.
When Camryn was attacked in the shop I was with her 100%, I just had a feeling that something bad was going to happen and I was hoping and praying that she would get out in time. However as time went on I found myself starting to dislike Camryn just a little bit and I found myself struggling to identify with her the more stressed she became.

I've read a few reviews and they've all said that the film was predictable and that they could see the ending coming a mile off. Maybe because I normally avoid watching slasher films (horror films in general to be honest) I did not see the ending coming and I didn't think it was predictable one bit.

Dragonball Evolution (James Wong, 2009)

Cast: Justin Chatwin, Chow Yun-fat, Emmy Rossum, Jamie Chung, Joon Park

Summary: The young warrior Son Goku sets out on a quest, racing against time and the vengeful King Piccolo, to collect a set of seven magical orbs that will grant their wielder unlimited power.

Genre: Action, Fantasy, Adventure

When I was in primary school (eek, we're talking over 12 years here) I was absolutely obsessed with shows like Dragonball Z and Yu-Gi-Oh, so when I heard about this film and that Justin Chatwin was going to be in it, I was super excited!

This film is awful. What an absolute load of rubbish! I don't know what I watched, but it was absolute nonsense. This is definitely up there in my list of worst films.

The story was told at lighting speed but not only that but the acting was absolutely horrendous, from Justin Chatwin to Emmy Rossum, Jamie Chung, basically everyone's performance is painful to watch.

The only decent thing about this film is the kung fu, and that was only alright.

Genre: Sci-fi, Horror, Drama

Watched: August 21st, 2016

I added this film to my Netflix watchlist after the poster caught my eye, I read the description and it sounded like something I would like.

I really enjoyed the opening scene of the zombie attack, it's something that I'm sure has been seen in countless films but I still love the way it's done here.
Unfortunately things start to go a little bit downhill from here, nothing to dramatic but I personally don't think that the rest of the film is as good as the opening sequence.

I was a bit confused at one point because I didn't understand what had happened between the two friends and on top of that, it took me a while to realise that neighbour Patrick was the same Patrick from the opening scene.
Personally I think that the length of time it takes before we learn about the ex-friends past is a little bit too long; things may have been a lot clearer the earlier it was brought in.
Extinction (2015) Still
The majority of the film is spent dealing more with Jack, Lu and their neighbour Patrick then with the zombies; they do get their last chance at stardom in the final fight, but I don't they're showcased as much as they could have been.

All in all it was a good films, despite a few problems I would definitely give it another watch.
