Dear White People (Justin Simien, 2014)

Dear White People (2014) Poster

Cast: Tessa Thompson, Tyler James Williams, Kyle Gallner, Teyonah Parris, Dennis Haysbert

Summary: The lives of four black students at an Ivy League college.

Genre: Drama, Comedy

Watched: March 29th, 2016

This film had been in my Netflix watch list for months before I finally decided to watch it. I had heard about the film a couple of years ago and was actually waiting for it to come out in cinemas but I ended up missing it.

I really enjoyed this film, I was a bit unsure about it at first but it turned out to be really good.
I spent the first 20 minutes or so incredibly confused because I thought that the film was set in the 70's, but then someone mentioned Housewives of Atlanta and I thought hang on a second that can't be right.

After I realised that the film is actually set in the present day I really started to get into it. The characters are absolutely brilliant, and I love how even though it's full of funny moments I still found myself thinking about some of the questions that were raised.
Dear White People (2014) Still The last few scenes were the ones that I enjoyed the most even though they made me feel incredibly awkward. It was those scenes that really made me sit back and think, shit, I wasn't expecting to feel like that. I totally was not expecting that.

Rating: 8.5/10
One Final Word: Very Good

I found this article on The Guardian that I thought was quite interesting: Justin Simien: 'I'm a black, I'm a man, I'm gay, but I'm more than all of those things'

Outfit | Blue/Grey

There's a massive difference between these four photos, the top two were taken with my new Nikon D3300 and the bottom two were taken with my Samsung WB100.

Blue Grey Blue Grey 2 After debating about buying a DSLR for a couple of years I finally decided to just do it, and I bought my Nikon back in January from John Lewis. I haven't used it a lot to be completely honest (I've used it a few times) but I want to learn more about it. I've just started an online class to help me learn more about my camera and what it can do, I'm only on lesson one at the moment but I'll update you on how it's going.

Anyway last weekend (just after the crazy storm we had) I decided to take some outfit photos with the Nikon and they turned out incredibly good, they're so bright, vivid and there's tons of detail. I don't yet have a remote for the camera so I had to keep running back and forth to set the timer, which annoyed me so I ended up switching to my Samsung.

I really need to buy a remote!

These pictures are grainy, not as vivid and just a bit grey. The WB100 is actually quite a good camera, I've used it hundreds of times (for 99% of my outfit photos) and I've taken some REAL GOOD photos with it, I think it was probably just the lighting that's made them look like that.

What camera do you use for your photos?

I'm just going to start by saying I'm not entirely sure what was going on with this film.

Once again I had this film in my Netflix watch list because I remembered reading about it in Empire magazine and thinking that it sounded like something I would watch.

I thought I knew what the film was going to be about, but yet again I was totally wrong. Most of the acting was actually okay and the story wasn't too bad but the biggest problem was the special effects. Now let me tell you, some of them were just so awful.
The film started and I was like oh this looks pretty cool, but then there was this chase scene on a motorbike and I had to do a triple take, I could not believe what I was seeing.

Bad special effects/CGI is always incredibly and these are just terrible.

The Babadook (Jennifer Kent, 2014)

The Babadook (2014) Poster

Cast: Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Daniel Henshall, Hayley McElhinney

Summary: A single mother, plagued by the violent death of her husband, battles with her son's fear of a monster lurking in the house, but soon discovers a sinister presence all around her.

Genre: Thriller, Horror

Australian writer and director Jennifer Kent’s directorial debut takes the everyday situation of children being afraid of imaginary figures such as the bogeyman and turns it thoroughly on its head.
The story comes about when 6-year-old Sam asks his mother to read a mysterious pop-up book he finds on his shelf, the story of Mister Babadook.

Did I mention that I don’t like horror films? Yes, all the time I know, but let me tell you this; this film completely freaked me out. I was expecting your typical horror story but what I got was so much more than that. It completely draws you in, getting into your mind and lingers long after the film has finished.

Noah Wiseman, who plays Samuel is perfect at the most irritating yet somehow still vulnerable child who seems intent on making his mother’s life a misery by having tantrums in the back of the car, making weapons to defeat monsters and getting suspended from school.

The film explores the taboo subject of mental illness by delving into the mind of a woman plagued by the death of her husband. You witness her sinking further and further into depression even resorting to medicating her son to get him to sleep so that she can rest.

And there's even a pop-up book (there was only a limited number of copies) which I think is incredibly cool. Anyone have one? Actually on second thought’s I think I’ll pass.

I definitely think this film is worth a watch, not only does it have good characters and a good story, but it’s absolutely terrifying.

My Rating: 10/10
One Final Word: Terrifying

The Making of Harry Potter - Warner Bros. Studio Tour

So on Wednesday I turned the ripe old age of 23 and one of my presents was a trip to the Warner Bros. Harry Potter Studio Tour!!

I absolutely love the Harry Potter films! I say the films because I was only in primary school when I tried to read Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, I wasn't much about reading then so I gave up but I definitely think I'll read them now.

The tour was absolutely fantastic, with two massive studios and a backlot filled with props, sets and other goodies, you're sure to be occupied for hours!
I'm even thinking or going back during their 15th anniversary for my sister's birthday!

Anyway here are some photos from the day!

All images belong to me
