Compliance (Craig Zobel, 2012)

by guest blogger Jay Kennedy.

Cast: Ann Dowd, Dreama Walker, Pat Healy, Bull Camp, James McCaffrey and Ashlie Atkinson

Summary: When a prank caller convinces a fast food restaurant manager to interrogate an innocent young employee, no-one is left unharmed. Based on true events.

Genre: Crime, Drama, Thriller

What would you do if someone told you that the law would back you up? How far would you go, knowing, it's cool, totally legal dude! Compliance is that story. Terrifying enough and what follows makes this film a horror story.

So we have burger flippin' teens taking orders from a manager who's taking orders from a regional manager, doing their everyday thing that happens in a mundane burger joint. Then the phone rings. It's a police man calling to inform the manager that Becky, the plucky counter girl, has just swiped cash out of a purse and to help in the investigation, management must detain her.

So what do you do? That's the movie for the next 90 minutes. What would you do if you were handed off the phone and the officer said, you have to strip search this person. You have to remove her under pants. You have to make certain she obeys you.

It's shocking, terrifying and worst of all, based on true events. It's a busy night in the burger place, so the phone is passed from one employee to the next, to the next until a major crime occurs and you are left staring at the screen, jaw agape horrifyingly uncomfortable.

The films actors are all fantastic. The premise, though simple, is completely brilliant. And don't be surprised to find yourself thinking, what would I do, then screaming "STOP! STOP! STOP!" at the screen more than once. This is more than a film, it's a study in what we do when we think we're in the right and our asses are on the line. See this movie and be as amazed as I was.

Perfect for: Guys & Gals with half a brain
One Final Word: Dyn-O-mite

Life as a Film Student #4 | History X Production Photos

So last week we did the filming for our final production of this year. We filmed on Monday and Tuesday from 9am to 5pm which meant that we had to be up at 5am to get to the set for 7am.
My role throughout the whole project has been production manager which meant that I had to find people to come to casting and I had to keep in touch with everyone we met with, so when it came to filming days I wasn't realy going to have that much to do so I made sure to take lots and lots of pictures on set.

So here's part 1. Enjoy!!

POTD: Possible Outfit of the Day

Finally managed to get another outfit post up although I haven't actually worn this one out yet, that's why it possible. So back in January I won a giveaway on Drawing Dreaming but because Chinese New Year was literally right round the corner I wasn't going to get my leggings for a while. But they finally came two weeks ago and I was totally shocked when I saw I had been sent two pairs!! Hopefully I'll have images of the second pair up next week.
I really like them, I love the feeling of the material and they have the right amount of stretchiness. The only downside is that they are a little big up top, I was sent Large when I asked for Small but I thibk Medium would have been perfect.

These pictures are so much better then the last ones, I still think the lighting can be worked on though.

Empire's Worst Ever Movies: Part 1

Another worst ever movie list but an Empire one this time. Part 2 to come soon!
(Article can found here)

50. Spider-Man 3 (2007)
49. Showgirls (1995)
48. Town & Country (2001)
47. Soul Plane (2004)

Spider-Man 3 - Redeeming Feature: JK. Simmons
I remember writing about Spider-Man in this post. I said I was going to watch it again but thinking about it now I don't think I will. From what I remember I didn't really like it any way. It's not the worst film I've seen but I know it was a massive disappointment to a lot of people.

46. Howard The Duck (1986)
45. Blade Trinity (2004)
44. The Matrix Revolutions  (2003)
43. Year One (2009)

Matrix Revolutions - Redeeming Feature: Final attack on Zion
I watched this again the other day and even though it's not the best I can't help but love the whole Matrix trilogy, but I definitely agree that the best thing about it is the final attack on Zion.

42. Parting Shots (1998)
41. Van Helsing (2004)
40. Superman IV: The Quest For Peace (1987)
39. Dunegons and Dragons (2000)

Van Helsing - Redeeming feature: Hugh Jackman's abs and hair.
I don't really remember what happened in the film all I remember is that the ending was a bit depressing, but I think I'm going to give it another watch.  Don't forget to keep a lookout for the reboot.

38. Son of the Mask (2005)
37. Max Payne (2008)
36. Eragon (2006)
35. House of the Dead (2003)

Son of the Mask - Redeeming Feature: Bob Hoskins is Odin.
I think this film is awful, but I've still seen it quite a few times. It doesn't in any way match up to the original film. As much as I love Bob Hoskins for me this film is unredeemable.

34. I Know Who Killed Me (2007)
33. Ultraviolet (2006)
32. The Spirit (2008)
31. The Pink Panther 2 (2009)

30. Scary Movie (2000)
29. Southland Tales (2006)
28. The Sweetest Thing (2002)
27. Street Fighter (1994)

Scary Movie - Redeeming Feature: Anna Faris

26. Glitter (2001)
25. Transformers Revenge of the Fallen (2009)

Transformers - Redeeming Feature: John Tuturro and Optimus Prime
I love this film. I know a lot of people hate it (and probably Michael Bay too) with all the extra robots and the overused explosions, but for me I feel the same about Transformers as I do The Matrix sequels I can't help but love them.

Do you hate any of these films or are there any other films you hate?

The Thing (Matthijs Van Heijningen Jr., 2011)

the thing 2011 poster

Cast: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Eric Christian Olsen

Summary: At an Antarctica research site after Norwegian researchers discover an alien craft buried in the ice, paranoia spreads like wildfire among the crew as they fight to survive against a insidious creature that goes on the attack.

Genre: Sci-Fi, Horror, Mystery

I think I should start off by saying that I hadn't actually seen John Carpenter's The Thing (1982) when I first watched this. Yes I know what you're thinking, how can you watch the prequel without having seen the original or even are you really a film student?!

Because I hadn't seen the original I had absolutely no idea what the story was about. I know I probably should have watched the original one first (because that's what most normal people do) but I didn't think it would be that much of a big deal.
the thing 2011 still
I really enjoyed this film (I've already had a few people disagree with me) the first time I watched it, and to be honest now that I have seen the original I don't think it really matters what order you watch the film. Most people will probably tell you that the original has to be watched before the prequel, one because it's the original and secondly because the prequel was made to answer those left over questions from the first film.

My Rating: 7/10
One Final Word: Very Good

Life as a Film Student- #3

The past two weeks have been real stressful, firstly my reading week where we get a week off to catch up with any reading (which I've never done) or any essays. Now this would have been the first reading week where I didn't actually have to do any work but instead I spent it worrying about my production module and getting people to come to our casting day. Secondly coming back to uni this week I was stressing about the essay I was struggling to write, plus really starting to dislike my uni choice and more production work!!! Now I don't have as much going on I'm feeling much better.
But let's go back to where I left off in the last Life as post.

The screening of our When Harry Met Sally exercise went down pretty well with the class and the tutors and we got some good feedback on it. It's not been put online yet but when it is I'll see if I can put it up here.
Before we finished the exercise we made a final decision on what we were going to do for our final production and we decided on doing a dinner table scene from American History X (Tony Kaye, 1998). After a lot of transcribing, meetings with Paul Tickell and group meetings in the cafe we finally got our script done and decided on anglicizing the scene. It's probably too long for a 5-8 minute scene but we can cut bits out during rehearsals.
american history x still
Now the next step was to cast our 6 actors, 3 women and 3 men. We put up adverts on Mandy.com, Starnow and Castingcallpro and we got a lot of responses, mostly from girls wanting to play the role of the younger sister or girlfriend, we also got a few responses from people wanting to play the role of Derek, but hardly anyone got back to us about the role of the mother, her youngest son and her boyfriend.

Our first actual casting day wasn't the best, some people didn't turn up (and didn't even bother to let us know they weren't coming) so we spent ages just hanging out in the room. Because we barely saw anyone on Monday we had to a last minute second casting on Wednesday which went a lot better. Everyone who said they were going to come actually did come and at around 6pm we decided on 5 of the people we wanted. We still don't have anyone to play the role of the mother's boyfriend so we are holding a final casting day tomorrow and hopefully we'll find someone.

That's it for now. More next time and I'll make sure to take pictures of everything that's going on.
